Today, this estate is considered one of the best Empire style buildings in Moscow and is known primarily as the Leo Tolstoy Museum. The iconic Russian novelist though has neither lived nor even visited there. It is quite likely that the founder of the museum, Valentin Bulgakov just liked the wooden house with its austere six column Ionic portico. Here's how he described the state of the building in the early 1920s: 'The whole house was already ravaged and neglected. Vacant rooms were completely stripped of furniture, not a single chair was left. Only two or three elegant stylish chandeliers under the ceilings have survived; fortunately, the wonderful ancient ceiling painting has remained intact as well – in other words, those things out of arm’s reach.'

The main house of the estate was probably built to architect A.G.Grigoriev's design in 1817–1822 (according to the best expert in his works E.A.Beletskaya) for Lieutenant of the Guards Vasily Abramovich Lopukhin. The estate comprises the whitewashed wall with gate pylons and a one storey outbuilding in the courtyard. After Vasily Abramovich, his sons Abram and Vladimir inherited the house; later, the older of them remained the sole owner. A.V. Lopukhin was known as translator and poet — he even wrote the Moscow Anthem in 1796.

Later yet, the estate went to E.I.Stanitskaya and in 1895 it was reconstructed to the design of architect S.U.Solovyov. The main house preserved its original layout and decor elements to the great extent. It is one of the most typical examples of Empire residential buildings in the Russian capital.

The one storey wooden building with mezzanines on a stone semi basement is following the street line. Windows are accentuated with the fan shaped keystones and are set in the broad rustication belt of the facade. The portico is decorated with a sculptured panel behind the columns with Ionic caps. Inside the house, there is a suite of formal rooms: a hall, sitting rooms and a grand bedroom. According to the Moscow tradition, they are following the main facade. Low ceiling living rooms face the courtyard, above them there is a mezzanine to which a staircase in a passage leads. Formal rooms are decorated with false vaulted ceilings and columns painted as marble. The filigree molding of the cornices and elaborate paintings are an amazing evidence of the finesse of those artists who made them.

The museum collections were moved over to the Lopukhin estate in 1920. The first exhibition at the new location was dedicated to the tenth anniversary of Leo Tolstoy's death.

Today this is one of the Leo Tolstoy destinations, an architectural heritage site of federal significance.
