The movement originated in 1935 and was named after the grabber of the mine "Central-Irmino" (Donbass), A. G. Stakhanov, who extracted 102 tons of coal at night from August 30 to August 1935 (5 hours 45 minutes) at a rate of 7 tons, and later September 19 - 227 tons.

The Stakhanov movement was seriously encouraged financially by awards and promoted by the All-Union Communist Party as a new stage of socialist competition and a form of increasing labor productivity.
