Smolenskaya square is a part of Sadovoe koltso (Garden Ring). Zemlyanoy shaft or, as it usually called, Starodom was here until 1820. The shaft was destroyed during the reconstruction of moscow after the Napoleonic fires, wide street laid in its place with green front gardens on both sides. markets were held on squares and interspersed street. During the fighting in the autumn of 1917 it was one of the strongholds of the White Guard troops defending Moscow. Today, Smolensk area - large motorways.
