Street Spiridonovka
Paolo Giovio Italian traveler, who visited Moscow in the XVI century, wrote about the area: "In the fields adjacent to the city is found an incredible number of wild goats and rabbits." Goats, by the way, was quite a home: it has a convenient pastures and Muscovites kept animals almost unattended, and why they made such an impression on the traveler. Needless tract Goat swamp known from the XIV century; flat moorland, where they took back the creek and river Chertory diamonds and Kabaniha, located between Tverskaya Street Tverskaya Boulevard, Nikitskaya and Big Garden street. The ancient name of the tract was preserved in the name built around 1600 Church Spiridony Wonderworker with Goat swamp. Stored here especially venerated old icon of St. Spyridon, who was the patron of shepherds and herdsmen. It is for the church (destroyed in 1932) was named a street Spiridonovka. At the end of XVI - early XVII century settlement was granted to the patriarch, why was even more surprisingly modern ear name: Patriarchal Goat Sloboda. Around the same time to dry the area and fish breeding ponds were dug, one of which is called the Patriarchal survived to our time. At the beginning of the XVII century Patriarch Hermogenes was highly esteemed and respected by the people who spoke during the Troubles against the Polish-Lithuanian occupation. Profane his name was Ermolai, which explains the name of the chapel of the Patriarchal Church of the Presentation of Mary, built in 1610-1612, respectively. Hence also the name Yermolayevsky alley. Temple bells ringing someone considered one of the most prominent in Moscow, was killed as Spiridonievsky in 1932. In the XVIII century patriarchal settlement was dismantled, goats was gone, too, gardens, marshes drained, and the ancient name Goat swamp gradually transformed into Kozihi. Spiridonovka same, whose length is quite small and is about 800 meters, gradually transformed. Today, it is incredibly attractive tourist street, with three museums and the incredible beauty of the houses. Do not pass this side of the street and those who study creativity of the architect Fyodor Shechtel. Spiridonovka 2/6 - house Ryabushinsky is perhaps one of the most famous monuments of Russian Art Nouveau, at the same time - Apartment Museum of Maxim Gorky. Here he settled in 1931, after his return from Italy, called the house "ridiculous house" and ordered to remove the fireplace with a bas-relief of female butterflies, and my room was called "bedroom ballerina." In a wing of the manor Ryabushinskys in the former premises of the servants, in 1942 settled the author of the novels "Peter I» and "The Road to Calvary" Alexei Tolstoy. In 1945 Spiridonovka even renamed the street Alexei Tolstoy, and in 1957, in a park near the lodge erected a monument to the writer. In 1987 the museum was opened here the writer. In 2009, the house 4, p. 1 opened a private museum "House Painting Icons and named SP Ryabushinsky" (currently closed for renovation).
