Российский государственный архив социально-политической истории (РГАСПИ) – основное хранилище документации по истории социализма, КПСС, комсомольского движения в СССР (свыше 200 тыс. единиц хранения).

Здание архива было спроектировано в 1926-27 гг. для Института В.И. Ленина, в первую очередь как хранилище и место изучения ленинских документов. С 1931 по 1954 гг. здесь находился Центральный партийный архив Института Маркса, Энгельса, Ленина и Институт марксизма-ленинизма при ЦК ВКП(б) – КПСС. Затем название еще несколько раз менялось.

Здание сооружено по проекту С. Чернышева в стиле советского конструктивизма на месте служебных строений частного дома 1850-х годов постройки и Тверской полицейской части 1823 года.

Фасады здания обращены на Тверскую площадь, Столешников пер., ул. Б. Дмитровка и Тверской пр., замыкая эти улицы и переулки в единый архитектурный комплекс.

Над главным входом в нишах до сих пор располагаются рельефные изображения идеологов социализма: Маркса, Энгельса и Ленина.

Библиотека Института В.И. Ленина хранилась в специальном книгохранилище, внутри которого сооружена металлическая конструкция, построенная независимо от стен здания на собственном фундаменте. Книгохранилище соединялось переходами с основными помещениями.

В цокольном этаже было оборудовано уникальное подземное хранилище-сейф для наиболее ценных документов: камера с непроницаемыми стальными стенами, полом и потолком. Для предохранения от сырости все было забетонировано, проложено свинцом и запаяно. Хранилище спроектировано и возведено немецкой фирмой Круппа в 1927 г. и было самым современным из существовавших на тот момент.

В 1982 г. к главному зданию было пристроено 14-этажное хранилище по проекту В. Попова. В 1970-х гг. здание архива, вместе с прилегающим архитектурно оформленным сквером, было признано объектом культурного наследия федерального значения.

Перед главным фасадом здания размещается памятник Ленину (1940 г., скульптор С. Меркуров), а также балюстрада, лестницы и фонтаны, выполненные в начале 1940-х гг. в мастерской А. Мордвинова.

Russian State Archive of Socio - Political History (RGASPI) is the main repository of documentation on the history of socialism, the Communist Party, the Komsomol movement in the USSR (over 200 thousand catalog numbered documents stored). Archive building was designed in 1926-27 for Institute of V.I. Lenin, primarily as a place of learning and a repository of Lenin's documents. From 1931 to 1954 here was the Central Party Archive of the Institute of Marx, Engels, Lenin and the Institute of Marxism- Leninism of the Central Committee of the CPSU ( b) - the Communist Party. Then the name has changed several times. The building is constructed by the draft of S. Chernyshev in the style Soviet Constructivism office buildings on the plot of a private house of the 1850s and former Tverskoy police department building of 1823. Facades of the building are turned on Tverskaya Square, Stoleshnikov lane., St. B.Dmitrovka and Tverskoy passage while connecting these streets and alleys in a single architectural complex. Relief images of the ideologists of socialism: Marx, Engels and Lenin are still above the main entrance in the niches. Library of the V.I. Lenin Institute of was kept in a special archive, which was built inside the metal structure independently from the walls of the building on its own foundation. Book Depository connected via transfers with other facilities. An unique underground safe storage was built in the basement for the most important documents: the camera with impenetrable steel walls, floor and ceiling. To protect from moisture it was concreted, paved and soldered with lead. Storage is designed and built by the German company Krupp in 1927 and was the most modern of existing at that time. In 1982 the main building was attached to 14-story warehouse designed by V. Popov. Archive building, together with the adjacent public garden of architectural design was considered an object of cultural heritage of federal importance in the 1970s. Front of the main facade of the building housed a statue of Lenin (1940, sculptor, S. Mercurov), and the balustrade, stairs and fountains made in the early 1940s by Mordvinov studio.
