Gracheva tenement house

От самого начала улицы Петровки хорошо просматривается пятиэтажное угловое здание с красивым волнообразным карнизом над высоким аттиком, украшенным изящной решеткой, с огромными окнами-витринами. Этот дом был одной из первых московских построек в новом стиле модерн. На месте старого здания, в 1902 году его возвел архитектор Эммануил Матвеевич Розен, выполнявший заказ тогдашней владелицы этого места Александры Степановны Грачевой. А еще здесь, в роскошных угловых помещениях первого и второго этажей, работал знаменитый московский магазин одежды «Жак», упоминаемый путеводителями начала века наравне с «Мюром и Мерилизом». Свое название он получил по имени владельца — Якова Ивановича Стейнера, чье имя в родной ему Богемии звучало как Жак Штейнер. Он был человеком своего быстро развивающегося, не стоящего на месте века: одним из первых в Москве велосипедистов (циклистов, как тогда говорили), увлеченным автомобилистом, членом Московского автомобильного общества (МАО) и его казначеем (в объявлениях о сборе членских взносов часто указывается именно этот адрес: магазин «Жак», Петровка, дом Грачевой (а позже — страхового общества «Якорь»: Грачева продала свой дом обществу в 1905 году). Здесь же располагались гостиница «Марсель», меблированные комнаты «Ноблес» и один из первых в городе кинотеатров — «Таумотограф» с залом на 60 мест. В одном из помещений дома, сменяя друг друга, работали несколько фотоателье: Романовского, Эйхенвальда, «Паола» Свищева. Интересна и предшествующая история этого места. До перестройки здания именно здесь располагалась имевшая в Москве непростую репутацию гостиница «Англия», в которой скоропостижно скончался «белый генерал» Скобелев (памятник ему, к слову сказать, был установлен впоследствии совсем неподалеку). В советские годы магазин «Жак» сменили «Шелкотрест» и «Синдшвейпром», точно так же торговавшие платьем и верхней одеждой. Интересно, что и в старом здании, рядом с гостиницей «Англия» находился известный тогда в Москве галантерейный магазин «Город Гамбург». В доме и по сей день идет активная торговля: один магазин сменяет другой. В бывших витринах «Жака» то вывешивается одежда, то выставляется обувь.

As soon as the building was completed, the "Architecture and Art Industry of the New style" program exhibition was opened in the halls of the second and third floors. This exhibition served the popularization of Art Nouveau style in many ways. From the very beginning of Petrovka street the five-story corner building with a beautiful undulating cornice above the high attic, decorated with exquisite trellis-work with huge windows is easily visible. This house was one of the first buildings in Moscow designed in the new modern style. At the site of the old building the architect Emmanuel Rosen erected in 1902 a new one - on the order of the place owner of that time Alexandra Gracheva. Here, in the luxurious corner rooms of the first and second floors, the famous Moscow "Jacques" clothing shop was functioning, to which at the beginning of the century the guidebooks referred alongside with "Muir and Mirrielees". It is named after the owner - Jakob Stainer, whose name in his native Bohemia sounded like Jacques Shteiner. He was a man of the his high-developing, forging ahead century: he was one of the first cyclists (tsiklist, as they said ) in Moscow, enthusiastic motorist, a member of the Moscow Automobile Society (MAO) and its treasurer (in the ads related to collection of the membership fees this address was mentioned: "Jacques" shop, Petrovka str., Gracheva house (and later – House of "Anchor" insurance company: Gracheva sold her house to this company in 1905). Here "Marseille" hotel was also located, as well as "Nobles" furnished rooms and one of the first cinemas in the city - "Taumotograf " - with room for 60 people. In one of the house premises, one after another, several stores were functioning: the one of Romanovsky, Eichenwald, Svishchev’s "Paola". The previous story of this place is also interesting. Before the reconstruction of the building here "England" was located – a hotel with formidable reputation, where the "White General" Skobeleff died suddenly (monument to him, by the way, was subsequently installed just down the road). In Soviet times, "Jacques" shop was replaced by "Shelkotrest" and "Sindshveyprom" which were also trading clothes. It is interesting that in the old building next to the "England" hotel was a well-known in Moscow haberdashery "City of Hamburg". The active trade is going on in this house till the present day - one store replaces another. Clothes and shoes are changing each other in the shop-windows of the former “Jacques” shop.
