Sytovs’ tenement house

На углу Мясницкой улицы и Банковского переулка стоит доходный дом, выстроенный в 1894-1895 годах. В XVIII в. Банковский переулок назывался Шуваловским по имени знаменитого фаворита Елизаветы Петровны графа П.И. Шувалова. Просвещенный и передовой человек, Шувалов занимался развитием банковского дела и продал Ассигнационному банку собственный дом на Мясницкой улице. Так появилось новое название у переулка.

В начале 1860-х годов обширное владение, занимавшее всю правую сторону Банковского переулка, приобрел купец первой гильдии И.Е. Сытов. В 70-х годах XIX в. эта часть Москвы подверглась особенно большим изменениям и воспринималась современниками как район новостроек. «Образующие единый квартал три дома – по Мясницкой, Банковскому и Кривоколенному, -- видимо, строились без общего плана: они имеют разное число этажей и разную их высоту <...>. Владельцем этих трех примыкавших друг к другу доходных домов был потомственный почетный гражданин С.И. Сытов», - пишет С.В. Смолицкий, автор книги «На Банковском: Летопись семьи в интерьере города».

Первый этаж доходного дома на углу Мясницкой и Банковского занимали магазины. В верхних этажах были меблированные комнаты, предназначавшиеся для сдачи в аренду. Также в своем владении И.Е. Сытов устроил фабрику парчовых тканей и открыл магазин по их продаже.

В 1890-х годах в доме поселилась семья друзей Пастернаков – Штихов. Лев Семенович Штих, известный московский врач-отоларинголог, запечатлен Л.О. Пастернаком еще на старой квартире в доме Лыжина в Оружейном переулке. На Мясницкую семьи переехали примерно в одно время. Дети двух семей были дружны с самого раннего возраста. Шура Штих и Боря Пастернак были одногодками, часто встречались, впоследствии отношения их переросли в близкое духовное родство, достигшее своей высшей точки в 1912 г., к которому относятся самое большое число их важнейших доверительных писем друг другу. Местом дружеских встреч часто становилась квартира в Банковском переулке. Квартира №31 располагалась на втором этаже и состояла их шести комнат – успешный врач Л.С. Штих мог позволить себе снять просторную квартиру в центре Москвы для своей большой семьи.

После революции на той же, ставшей неожиданно крошечной после безжалостного уплотнения, территории проживало семь семей, однако А.Л. Штих не покинул ее до самой своей смерти в 1962 году. Там, в единственной комнате, оставшейся семье Штиха от прежней площади, его посещал Б. Пастернак и в 1950-х годах.

На сегодняшний день все дома бывшего доходного владения Сытовых являются ценными градоформирующими объектами.

There is a former tenement house at the corner of Myasnitskaya Street and Bankovsky Lane, built in the years 1894-1895. In the 18th century Bankovsky Lane was called Shuvalovsky Lane after the famous favorite of Elizabeth Petrovna Graf P. Shuvalov. Being an educated and progressive person, Shuvalov worked on the development of banking and sold his own house on Myasnitskaya street to the Assignatsionny Bank. Thus, a new name of the lane was born. The merchant I.E.Sytov acquired the sprawling property, which occupied the entire right side of Bankovsky Lane, in the early 1860s. This part of the city has undergone great changes, and was perceived by contemporaries as a fresh neighborhood in the 1870’s. ‘It looks like the three houses forming a single quarter – one on Myasnitskaya Street, another one on Bankovsky Lane and the third one on Krivokolenny Lane - were built without a general plan in mind, they have different number of floors and their varying height <... >. The owner of the three adjoining tenements was the hereditary honorary citizen S.I.Sytov’, wrote Sergey Smolitsky, the author of the book "On Bankovsky Lane: The Chronicle of a Family in a City Environment." Shops occupied the ground floor of the apartment building on the corner of Myasnitskaya Street and Bankovsky Lane. Furnished rooms, intended to be rented out, were on the upper floors. I.E.Sytov also created a textile factory in the building and opened a shop to sell the textiles. The Shtikh family, friends of the Pasternaks, moved into the house in the 1890’s. Leo Semenovich Shtikh, a prominent Moscow otorhinolaryngologist, was portrayed by L.O.Pasternak in the old apartment in Lyzhin’s house on Oruzheiny Lane. The two families moved to Myasnitskaya around the same time. The children of the two families were friends from an early age. Shura Shtikh and Boris Pasternak were of the same age, often met each other, and their relationship developed into a close spiritual relationship, which reached its highest point in 1912, the year the largest number of important confidential letters that they wrote to each other. They often met in the apartment on Bankovsky Lane. Apartment number 31, located on the second floor, had six rooms - a successful physician like L.S. Shtikh could afford to rent a spacious apartment in the center of Moscow for his large family. After the revolution, the same place - which suddenly became tiny after it was turned into a communal apartment and ruthlessly settled - was home to seven families. However, A.L.Shtikh did not leave it until his death in 1962. There, in the single room that was left for the Shtikh family, he was visited by Boris Pasternak in the 1950’s. Today all of the buildings of the former Sytovs’ tenement house hold the official title of ‘valuable structures that form the city’s look.’
