Дом Мараевых

Сразу за церковью Никиты Мученика по четной стороне Старой Басманной улицы начинается ряд живописных старинных домов, ныне принятый под государственную охрану как выявленный объект культурного наследия «Комплекс сооружений XVIII-XIX вв.».

Ближайший к храму особняк (дом № 18, строение 1) связан с историей знаменитой старообрядческой семьи купцов и фабрикантов Мараевых – бывших крепостных, создателей текстильных производств в Серпуховском уезде и замечательной художественной коллекции западноевропейской живописи и декоративно-прикладного искусства. Она доныне составляет основу Серпуховского художественного музея.   

Во второй половине XIX столетия разбогатевшие Мараевы стали перебираться в Москву: купили несколько домовладений на Старой Басманной улице, в том числе и земельный участок по данному адресу. Ранее он входил в состав городской усадьбы купцов Ануфриевых; после ее раздела в 1878 году здесь строится дом для фабриканта Мефодия (Нефеда) Мараева, по проекту архитектора Митрофана Арсентьева. После смерти хозяина (и многолетних судебных тяжб между родственниками-наследниками) дом стал принадлежать его вдове Анне Васильевне Мараевой.

Трехэтажный дом вытянут в глубину узкого участка (владельцы старались по максимуму использовать полезную площадь). Фасад, обращенный к улице, подражает стилю французского неоклассицизма XVIII столетия, с барочными реминисценциями. Парадный уличный фасад украшен шестью пилястрами, лепным карнизом. Венчает его небольшой аттик над кровлей. Богато отделаны окна парадных комнат второго этажа: лучковые сандрики над окнами, филенки с лепниной под ними. Углы дома отмечены лопатками.

Нижний хозяйственный этаж дома Мараевых трактован как цокольный; он значительно ниже двух верхних и отделан в классическом стиле. В планировке дома до сих пор «читается» деление на парадную и хозяйственную половины, соответственно, с парадной и «черной» лестницами.

Несмотря на внешний вид частного городского особняка, домовладение было доходным – сказывалась купеческая хватка. Для этих целей использовалась протяженная часть здания, вытянутая вдоль участка. Ее художественная обработка гораздо более скромная, чем на фасадной части дома Мараевых.

Ныне здание используется под офисы.

Right behind the Nikita the Martyr Church, on the even side of the Staraya Basmannaya Street, begins a series of pretty old houses that have been taken under the state protection as a newly identified cultural heritage site "Complex of Structures of 18th 19th Centuries". The mansion nearest to the Church (number 18, building 1) used to be owned by the Marayev family, famous Old Believers, merchants and manufacturers of serf origin. They have established a number of textile factories in the Serpukhov District and owned an outstanding collection of Western European arts and crafts. The collection still forms a core of the Serpukhov Arts Museum collection. In the second half of the 19th century, having built up a fortune, the Marayev family have moved to Moscow: they have bought some properties on the Staraya Basmannaya Street including this very land plot. Earlier, it was a part of the Anufriyev merchant family homestead; following the plot’s division in 1878, a house for Mefody (Nefiod) Marayef, a manufacturer has been built to the architect Mitrofan Arsentyev's design. After the owner’s death and many years of litigations between his heirs, the house went to his widow Anna Vasilievna Marayeva. The three storey building has a rectangular layout with its longer walls going inward the narrow plot (the owners sought to use the area to the maximum). The facade along the street is mimicking the 18th century French Neoclassicism, with the inclusion of some Baroque elements. The front facade is decorated with six pilasters and a stucco cornice. On top of the roof, there is a small attic. The windows in the piano nobile are richly decorated: small shallow arched pediments above, moulding panels below. The corners of the house are set out with lesenes. The lower — service — floor of the Marayev house has been designed as a semi basement; it is much lower than the upper two floors and is designed in the neoclassical style. The house layout still is divided into the formal and service parts with the main and the back staircases respectively. The house's appearance of a private home was deceptive: in fact the property was a tenement building — the owners' commercial acumen gave itself away. The longer part of the building running inward the plot was used for this purpose. This part's decor is much more modest compared to the facade of the Marayev house.
