В Москве Михаил Семенович Щепкин сменил несколько адресов. Дольше всего, с 1830 года по 1847, он прожил в своем собственном доме в Большом Спасском (ныне – Большом Каретном) переулке. К сожалению, этот уютный двухэтажный особнячок был совершенно бессмысленно снесен в 1980 году. Не сохранился и дом, который Михаил Семенович снимал в 1850-е годы в Воротниковском переулке. Дом на улице Щепкина (бывшей 3-й Мещанской улице) – единственное сохранившееся обиталище великого актера, здесь прошли последние четыре года его жизни.
Допожарный деревянный особняк, переживший «грозу двенадцатого года», в своей основе имеет бревенчатый сруб, сложенный «без единого гвоздя». При доме был густой, тенистый сад, где «шумели развесистые березы, и цвела сирень и кусты малины, смородины и крыжовника, точно где-нибудь в деревне». Широкий двор, заросший лопухами. В доме на Мещанской, впрочем, как и всегда у Щепкина, было многолюдно. Большая семья, ученики, многих из которых он привечал у себя и предоставлял кров. А порой, по рассказам людей знавших Михаила Семеновича, и просто незнакомые люди, решившие воспользоваться радушием и гостеприимством хозяина: «между посещающими, иногда бывали случайные гости, неведомо откуда явившиеся, и вряд ли кому приходило на ум навести справки об этих сюрпризных гастрономах». И, конечно, друзья. Собиратель русских сказок А. Н. Афанасьев, знаменитый переводчик У. Шекспира Н. Х. Кетчер, живший в доме напротив. Гостил американский трагик А. Ольридж. Некоторое время в доме Щепкина жил, совсем еще юный, впервые приехавший в Москву, впоследствии известный актер и театральный антрепренер М. В. Лентовский.
В апреле 1863 года Щепкину был дан отпуск с сохранением жалованья и с пособием в 500 рублей. Он уехал в Крым, чтобы восстановить там свое пошатнувшееся здоровье. Но ни особнячка на 3-й Мещанской, ни родного Малого театра, которому Михаил Семенович отдал сорок лет своей жизни, он больше не увидел. 11 августа в Ялте Щепкин скончался. Отпевали его в соседней с домом церкви Филиппа Митрополита на 2-й Мещанской, гроб с телом великого актера на руках несли на Пятницкое кладбище, где он и был упокоен.
Через два года после его смерти особняк был перестроен новыми владельцами – Пановыми. В конце 1990-х годов дом был поставлен на реставрацию, в ходе которой был уничтожен декор 1865 года и воссоздан фасад щепкинского времени.
Сейчас здесь находится Дом-музей М. С. Щепкина, включенный в объединение театральных музеев Москвы имени А. А. Бахрушина. Проводятся творческие и музыкальные вечера, встречи с актерами московских театров. При музее действует театральная труппа.

Pre-fire wooden house, a survivor of "storm the twelfth year," has a log house, built "without a single nail” in the foundation. Dense, shady garden, where "noisy bushy birch, and bloomed lilac bushes and raspberries, currants and gooseberries, just somewhere in the village" was by the house. There was a wide yard with lots of burdock. It was always crowded at the Shchepkin’s house on Meshanskaya. Large family, students, many of whom he patronized and gave shelter to. And sometimes, according to stories of people who knew Mikhail Semenovich, he accepted strangers who choose to take advantage of the warmth and hospitality of the host: "between the visitors were sometimes occasional guests, which were the out of nowhere, and hardly it came to anyone’s mind to inquire about these surprise eaters." And, of course, friends. Collector of Russian fairy tales AN Afanasyev, the famous translator of Shakespeare NH Ketscher, who lived in the house across the street. American tragedian A. Olridzh visited here. MV Lentovsky later -well known actor and theater impresario, when he came to Moscow for the first time as a very young man lived in Shchepkin’s house for some time.
In April 1863, Shchepkin was given a leave of absence with pay and allowance of 500 rubles. He went to the Crimea to regain there his failing health. But did not see neither the mansion on the 3rd Meshchanskaya or native Maly Theatre, to which Mikhail Semenovich dedicated forty years of his life ever again. Shchepkin died on August 11, 1863 in Yalta. His funeral held in the Church of Philip the Metropolitan located next to the house on the 2nd Meshchanskaya. The coffin with the body of a great actor in his arms bore to the Pyatnitskoye cemetery, where he was reposed.
Two years after his death, the mansion rebuilt by new owners - Panov. In the late 1990s, the house put to restoration, in which the decor of 1865 was destroyed and facade of Shepkin’s time was reconstructed.
Now here is the house-museum of MS Shchepkin included in the theatrical association of Moscow museums named after Bakhrushin. Creative and musical evenings, meetings with actors of Moscow theaters held here. The museum operates a theater troupe.
