Церковь Афанасия и Кирилла, патриархов Александрийских стоит между Большим Афанасьевским и Филипповским переулками, занимая всю ширину квартала. Сейчас церковь отделена от Сивцева Вражка одним домом, построенным на церковной земле в 1914 году по проекту М. Д. Холмогорова.
Переулок Сивцев Вражек прошёл по руслу старинной речки Сивки. Речка впадала в бурный ручей Черторый, протекавший вдоль Пречистенского (Гоголевского) бульвара. На холме, над Сивкой и была построена деревянная церковь. Время её основания остаётся неизвестным. В приходно-расходных книгах Патриаршего приказа под 1631 годом церковь Афанасия и Кирилла значится как новоприбылая, то есть вновь построенная. Прихожанами церкви в XVII веке были москвичи, обслуживающие царский двор, в приходе было около 30 дворов.
Каменная церковь Афанасия и Кирилла с Никольским приделом была построена и отделана к 1710 году. Прихожанами в XVIII веке были большей частью дворяне, в том числе представители прославленных в истории России фамилий.
В 1812 году во время пожара приход церкви Афанасия и Кирилла выгорел, пострадала и сама церковь. Богослужения возобновились в ней в 1815 году.
В 1836 году решено было вместо старого обветшавшего и пострадавшего от пожара храма строить новый. Работы шли долго и закончились лишь в 1856 году. Возможно, что при строительстве использовали части стен старой церкви. Финансировал строительство купец К. С. Бубнов. По его настоянию главный престол был освящён во имя Воскресения Словущего, то есть в память Обновления храма Воскресения в Иерусалиме. Приделы в церкви освящены во имя святых Афанасия и Кирилла и св. Николая. Пространство храма отличается гармоничностью пропорций. В нём, благодаря работе архитектора, человек чувствует себя умиротворённым, спокойным и сосредоточенным.
Службы в церкви Афанасия и Кирилла прекратились в 1932 году, здание Филипповского двора заняли новые хозяева. В храме были разные учреждения, в том числе заводской цех. Отделка интерьера, иконостасы были уничтожены. Церковь вернули верующим в 1993 году. Тогда же вернулся в церковь и её храмовый образ – икона Афанасия и Кирилла, сохранявшаяся в соседней церкви апостола Филиппа в Филипповском переулке.

Sivtsev Vrazhek Lane passed along the bed of an ancient river Sivka. The river flowed into the rapid stream Chertory that flowed along Pretchistensky (Gogolevsky) boulevard. The church Athanasius and Cyril listed as “novopribylaya”, i.e. newly built in the account books of the Patriarch's order in 1631. Muscovites serving the royal court were parishioners of the church in the XVII century, in the parish was about 30 yards.
Stone Church of Athanasius and Cyril with Nikolsky side chapel was built and finished by 1710. Parishioners were mostly nobles, including representatives of the illustrious names in the history of Russia in the XVIII century.

In 1836, parish decided to replace the old dilapidated and suffered from a fire and to build a new temple. The works were long and ended only in 1856. Perhaps parts of the walls of the old church used in the construction. Merchant KS Bubnov financed the construction. At his insistence, the high altar consecrated in the name of the Resurrection, that is, in memory of renewal of the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem. Chapels in the church consecrated in the name of St. Athanasius and Cyril and St. Nicholas. Space of the church differs by harmonious proportions. People feel peaceful, calm and focused in the church thanks to the work of the architect.
The church Athanasius and Cyril ceased in 1932, the building Filippovsky yard occupied by new owners. Different institutions, including the factory floor were in the temple since. Interior trim and iconostasis destroyed. The church returned to believers in 1993. The main temple image - an icon of Athanasius and Cyril, stored in the nearby church of St. Philip in Philippovsky alley returned to the church.
