Дом на углу Новокузнецкой улицы и 1-го Новокузнецкого переулка настолько же не типичен для современной Москвы, насколько типичен для Москвы старой. Это образец распространённого в русской архитектуре типа полукаменного жилого дома. Такие дома во множестве строились на окраинах Москвы и в других русских городах. Хозяевами и жителями таких домов чаще всего бывали люди среднего достатка. Сегодня полукаменных домов в Москве так мало, что их можно пересчитать по пальцам.
Этот кирпичный, первоначально одноэтажный дом был построен в первой половине XIX века как флигель в большой усадьбе. В 1875 году над каменным флигелем архитектор К.А. Козьмин надстроил деревянный этаж для нового хозяина усадьбы, купца, потомственного почётного гражданина Тимофея Терентьевича Волкова. Надстройка делалась для устройства новых квартир, предназначенных под сдачу в наём. С этого времени дом мало изменился. До 1960-х годов в четырёх квартирах дома жило несколько десятков человек. После расселения здание перешло в ведение городских коммунальных служб, которые располагаются здесь и по сей день. Дом подвергся капитальному ремонту в 1990-е годы и содержится в хорошем состоянии.
Главный дом владения тоже сохранился. Это трёхэтажное здание в глубине участка, за парадным двором. Дом дошёл до нас в перестройке 1891 года. Старый ампирный двухэтажный дом с мезонином был капитально перестроен и перепланирован под квартиры. Вместо мезонина над ним появился полноценный третий этаж. Очень часто новые хозяева переделывали доставшиеся им старые господские особняки под квартиры. Так дом в конце XIX – начале ХХ века давал больше дохода.

This brick, originally one-storey house built in the first half of the XIX century as a wing in a large estate.
