The Old English Court Museum

The chambers of the Old English Court on Varvarka Street are one of the oldest buildings of the capital. This unique monument of civil architecture was erected at the beginning of the 16th century. The history of the house is indissolubly linked with the birth and formation of Anglo-Russian relations, which flourished during the reign of Tsar (king) Ivan IV and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1555 the Moscow trade Company was established in London, which in1556 receive as a gift from Ivan the Terrible in Moscow on Varvarka Street near the church of Saint Maxim. Thus, today the chambers of the Old English Court – the oldest official establishment of foreign power which preserves in Moscow. In halls of museum there are household items, copies of archival documents, photographic materials and also archaeological finds made during excavations at Zaryadye. The presented exhibits tell about the building’s history, about Russian-English relations in the 16th-17th centuries, about the beginning of diplomatic relations between London and Moscow in which the Old English Court played an important role. The Old English Court museum is a member of the Museum association “Museum of Moscow”.

Старый Английский двор — одно из древнейших зданий столицы.

В самом старом пространстве музея — белокаменном подклете, сохранившем лестничные ступени и участки оригинальной кладки XVI века — можно увидеть выставки проекта «Подклет». Главным экспонатом каждой выставки становится одна археологическая ценность, культовая реликвия или современный арт-объект – любой предмет с биографией. Вокруг него создается «мультимедийное поле», в которое входят исторические исследования, интервью с экспертами, фрагменты из кино и литературы. 

В верхних палатах Старого Английского двора вы узнаете о том, как был устроен быт английских купцов и предпринимателей, что они ввозили и вывозили из России, как была организована торговля. Пройдете по Казенной палате, где проводились торжественные приемы, хранилась казна и заключались торговые сделки. В Поварне увидите модель английского галеона XVI-XVII веков, образцы товаров и дорожное снаряжение английских путешественников, а также карту, на которой показаны маршруты их путешествий по России и опасных морских экспедиций, сблизивших две державы в эпоху Великих географических открытий.

The beginning of the museum was laid in the mid-nineties of the XIX century by a private collection of the famous Moscow industrialist and philanthropist Alexei Alexandrovich Bakhrushin. Today, the museum has more than one and a half million exhibits: sketches of costumes and scenery by outstanding masters of set design, photographs and portraits, stage costumes of great actors, programs and playbills of plays, rare publications on theatrical art, objects of decorative and applied art and much more. Theatrical collection has become one of the most valuable museum collections in modern Russia, it presents works by Bakst, Golovin, Kustodiev, Dobuzhinsky, Korovin, Yuon, Roerich, Tatlin, Exter, Rodchenko, Popova and other eminent masters. A variety of exhibitions are held in the main building of the museum and its many branches. The Bakhrushin Museum is always open for theater lovers. In addition to a detailed excursion program, interesting for both children and adults, the museum organizes lectures on the history of the theater using unique stock materials, meetings with famous artists, and creative evenings.

The Moscow museum of archeologyThe Moscow museum of archeology, located in an underground pavilion on the depth of 7 meters in the historical centre of the city, directly on the place of large archeological excavations of the 1993-1996th, gives a view of the medieval capital, history of development of the territory of modern Manezh Square, contains overview about methodology of archeological research. The museum acquaint with material culture of Moscow and the Moscow region from the Paleolithic to the 19th century. The exposition is based on the foundations of the Voskresenskiy Bridge of the 17-18th centuries, which connected two banks of the Neglinnaya River in the past, that were discovered during the excavations.
