Площадь названа по некогда существовавшим Мясницким (Фроловским) воротам в стене Белого города, на пересечении этой стены с Мясницкой улицей. В 1934—1994 годах площадь называлась Кировские ворота, т.к. ул. Мясницкая была переименована в ул. Кирова.
До 1934 года площади у «ворот» не было. Вплотную к Мясницкой со стороны Чистопрудного бульвара подступал громоздкий трехэтажный дом (такие дома в XIX веке были устроены на концах всех бульваров – в них располагались небольшие гостиницы, меблированные комнаты и трактиры). Дом снесли в связи со строительством вестибюля станции метро Кировская (Чистые пруды), который таким образом оказался в центре просторной, открытой со всех сторон площади.
В 1990-е годы по обеим сторонам от вестибюля метро были выстроены торговые павильоны, которые существенно визуально уменьшают площадь.
Located in the Basmanny district. On the square is the metro station "Pure ponds". The area is named for the once existed Myasnitskie (Frolovsky) gate in the wall of the White City, at the intersection of the wall with the Myasnitskaya Street. In the years 1934-1994 the area known as Kirov gate, because st. Butchers was renamed the street. Kirov. Before 1934 the area at the "gate" was not. Close to the Butcher from Chistoprudny Boulevard rises bulky three-story house (such houses in the XIX century have been arranged at the ends of all the boulevards - they have small hotels, rooming houses and restaurants). The house was demolished for the construction of the metro station Kirov (Clean Ponds), which thus became the focus of a large, open on all sides of the square. In the 1990s, on both sides of the lobby were built underground shopping pavilions, which significantly reduces the visual area.
