Страстной бульвар – широкий, в несколько аллей парк, расположенный за кварталом киноконцертного зала «Россия». До 1937 года Страстной бульвар тянулся в одну аллею от Тверской улицы мимо стен Страстного монастыря и далее до площади Петровских ворот. За монастырем располагался Нарышкинский сквер, образовавшийся на месте Сенной площади. Сквер был устроен в 1872 году на средства Е.А. Нарышкиной, жившей неподалеку в доме № 9.
Название бульвара напоминает о Страстном монастыре, который занимал все пространство нынешнего сквера, где сейчас расположился памятник А.С. Пушкину.
Сегодня бульвар стал короче, он имеет протяженность 550 м, однако зеленая его часть не превышает и 300 м. Зато это самый широкий бульвар Бульварного кольца – 123 метра!
Нумерация домов ведется от Пушкинской площади. Четная сторона улицы занята рядом многоэтажных доходных домов.
На бульваре были открыты два памятника. На Петровской площади – памятник В.С. Высоцкому. Он был открыт 25 июля 1995 года в пятнадцатилетнюю годовщину смерти поэта, певца, актера театра на Таганке.
В центре бульвара в 1999 году был установлен памятник выдающемуся пианисту, композитору, дирижеру С.В. Рахманинову.
Strastnoy boulevard is a wide park consisting of several avenues, located behind the «Rossiya» theater (former “Pushkinsky” cinema theater).
Till 1937 this boulevard was comprised in one avenue and spreaded from Tverskaya street along the walls of the The Strastnoy Convent till the Petrovsky gates square.
The name of the boulevard reminds of The Strastnoy Convent which occupied the whole territory of the present garden square where the monument to Alexander Pushkin is standing now.
With the time the boulevard became shorter, it is 550 meters long but its “green” part is not longer than 300 meters. But still Strastnoy boulevard is the broadest place of the Boulevard ring - 123 meters!
Two monuments were installed on this boulevard. The monument to Vladimir Vysotsky - a Russian singer-songwriter, poet, actor of the Taganka theater – was erected on the Petrovskaya square on the 25th of July of 1995. And in the central part of Strastnoy boulevard there is a monument to a Russian pianist, composer, conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff (erected in 1999).
House numbering starts from the Pushkin Square, the side with even numbered houses is occupied by the multistory tenement buildings.
1) The University press house
Located in the center of the boulevard the classical ensemble of The University press house was built at the beginning of the XIX century by the architect N. Sobolevskiy (with the assistance of the court counselor of MoscowUniversity press house F. Buzhinsky). Now the ‘Union of Theater Workers’ is located in the house, which publishes the "Strastnoy Boulevard, 10" magazine.
2) The House of the Electromechanical Institute
The corner house number 16 – a constructivism style building with narrow windows and a semi-circular design of the facade. Moscow Aviation Technical Institute named after K.Tsiolkovsky was situated here.
3) Novoekaterininskaya hospital
On the other side of Strastnoy boulevard the house number 15 is the remarkable one. For more than one hundred years this building was the manor of the Gagarin family.
The first architect of the manor was M. Kazakov, the house was rebuilt several times after, but still its classic twelve column portico attracts attention of the passers-by. The house is rich in history: English Club, Novoekaterininskaya hospital.
4) The Utro Rossii Printing House is located in the house number 7. The house was built by the architect F. Shekhtel. With huge shop-windows, flowing corners - the building looks elegant and laconic at the same time.
