Садовая-Каретная улица, начинаясь от Лихова переулка, некогда круто спускалась к Самотечной площади, через которую протекала река Неглинная. Теперь уклон сильно смягчен, а для транзитного транспорта и вовсе неощутим, благодаря построенной в 1967 году эстакаде.
В 1812 году улица сгорела, в декабре 1905 года испытала серьезный обстрел царской артиллерии.
Хочется вспомнить записки писателя С. П. Подьячева, ехавшего отсюда в 1880-х годах на Садовую-Кудринскую к А. П. Чехову на давно забытом виде транспорта — конке:
«По ровному месту и под гору везли вагон только две лошади, а где приходилось подниматься на пригорок, как, например, с Самотеки, от Екатерининского парка в гору к Каретному ряду, — пристегивали другую пару лошадей, и на одной из них сидел верхом мальчишка “фаретор”, обязанность которого заключалась в том, чтобы орать во всю глотку и нещадно нахлестывать кнутом лошадей — ту, на которой сидел, и другую рядом с ней. Сегодня Садовая-Каретная – это оживленная магистраль на севере Садового кольца от Садовой-Триумфальной до Садовой-Самотёчной улицы. Начинается от пересечения Садового кольца с Малой Дмитровкой из центра и Долгоруковской улицей. С внутренней стороны к ней примыкает улица Каретный Ряд, с внешней - Краснопролетарская. С внешней стороны от Садовой-Каретной под острым углом отходит Делегатская улица, затем от центра на неё выходит Лихов переулок, отделяющий Садовую-Каретную от Садовой-Самотёчной.
