The 'House with lions'

Огромное представительное здание (7-8 этажей), с великолепным оформлением фасада (декоративные арки, пилястры, лепнина, окна разной формы, эркеры), навеянное формами итальянского Ренессанса. Вход обозначен тремя крупными фасадными арочными нишами и двумя скульптурами львов с геральдическими щитами (каждый 3 м длиной и 1,5 м высотой). Эти львы стали своего рода символом дома. Да и в дореволюционной Москве Малую Молчановку все чаще называли «улицей, где дом со львами».

Выстроенный архитекторами И.Г. Кондратенко, С.А. Дорошенко, В.Н. Волокитиным для домовладелицы Г.А. Гордон, дом получился весьма незаурядным. Об этом свидетельствует уже тот факт, что кинематографисты советских времен, умевшие выбирать и общие планы, и декорации, не раз использовали его в своих фильмах.

И, конечно, этот дом привлекал известных людей, в частности, в 1917-1918 годах на пятом этаже жил писатель Алексей Толстой, в гостях у него бывали поэты Клюев и Есенин. В 1916-1948 гг. здесь квартировал ученый-патологоанатом В. Н. Талалаев, а в 1923-1929 гг. - профессор психиатрии Ю. В. Каннабих. Проживал здесь и поэт М.А. Волошин (кв. №25). Кроме того, в этом доме бывали М.И. Цветаева, М.Н. Загоскин и А.В. Моравов.

Сегодня в доме со львами всего 27 квартир, площадь которых от 120 до 340 кв. м. В комнатах высокие потолки до 4 метров, французские балконы и свободная планировка с эксклюзивной отделкой и сохраненной уникальной внутренней лепниной.

В ходе последней реконструкции сохранили все три существовавшие в доме лестничные клетки, в том числе и "черный" ход. Более того - следуя старомосковской архитектурной традиции, было решено оставить выходы на эту лестницу из всех квартир. Такое решение небесполезно и с точки зрения безопасности жильцов: в случае возникновения пожара в парадном "черный ход" становится эвакуационным выходом. Тогда же здесь появилось двухуровневое жилье, зимние сады и бесшумные лифты.

Безусловно, доходный дом, уже целый век стоящий на Малой Молчановке, и сегодня является украшением нашего города.

This is a huge, imposing building of eight floors, its facade adorned magnificently with arches, pilasters, moldings, windows of various shapes, and window bays, all inspired by the Italian Renaissance. The main entrance of the building is emphasized by three large arched niches and two sculptures of lions with heraldic shields (each 3 m long and 1.5 m high). These lions became the signature part of the house’s look. Even before the revolution, Moscow’s Malaya Molchanovka street was referred to as ‘the street where the house with lions is’ more and more frequently. Designed by architects I.Kondratenko, S.Doroshenko, and V.Volokitin for G.Gordon who became the house’s first owner and its landlady, the building is truly remarkable. One evidence of this is the fact that Soviet-era filmmakers, who were definitely connoisseurs when it came to picking places for doing main takes and finding settings for them, used this house repeatedly in their movies. The house has attracted a lot of famous people, of course. For instance, the writer Alexei Tolstoy lived on the fifth floor in 1917-1918, and poets Nikolay Kluev and Sergey Yesenin often came over to see him. The scientist and pathologist V.Talalaev resided here in 1916-1948; the psychiatrist Y.Kannabikh was also a resident of the house in 1923-1929, as was the poet Maximillian Voloshin who lived in apartment 25. Authors Marina Tsvetaeva and Mikhail Zagoskin, and the artist Alexander Moravov came here often, too. There are only 27 apartments in the house, their surface ranging from 120 to 340 square meters. The ceilings of the rooms are up to 5 meter high; the apartments are open plan, with balconettes, modern interiors. The unique old plasterwork still survives here and there. During the latest renovation of the house, all three existing stair landings, as well as the backdoor entrance were preserved. Moreover, as per the old architectural tradition of Moscow, the doors leading to the backdoor entrance were preserved in all the apartments. Traditions put aside, this was done in the sake of the security of the residents: in case of a fire, the backdoor can serve as an emergency exit. Two-level apartments, interior gardens, and silent elevators were constructed here at the same time. A century after it was built, the ‘House With Lions’ on Malaya Molchanovka still remains one of Moscow’s landmarks.
