Многоквартирный доходный дом, стоящий на углу Чистого, бывшего Обухова, переулка и правой стороны Пречистенки, был построен в 1904 году по проекту архитектора Семена Федоровича Кулагина. Массивный, четырехэтажный желтый дом украшен белым рустом по первому этажу, несколько окон по фасаду, выходящему на Пречистенку, имеют портики с полуколонками. Фасад, выходящий в Чистый переулок, украшают два больших окна, объединяющие второй и третий этажи.

В начале ХХ века в этом доме жил дядя М.А. Булгакова Николай Михайлович Покровский, известный врач-гинеколог, у него же часто гостил и проживал в специально отведенной комнате второй дядя писателя, терапевт по образованию, Михаил Михайлович Покровский. В квартире № 12 у дядюшек Михаил Афанасьевич бывал сотни раз как до переезда в Москву, так и после.

В бывшем «Калабуховском доме», во втором подъезде, в бельэтаже занимал квартиру Филипп Филиппович Преображенский из повести «Собачье сердце», прототипом которого стал Н.М. Покровский. В операционной комнате большой профессорской квартиры Преображенский проводил смелый опыт по омоложению путем пересадки гипофиза, вылившийся в неожиданное «полное очеловечение» подопытного пса Шарика. Здесь же новоявленный гражданин Шариков претендовал на законные «16 квадратных аршин» профессорской квартиры.

После публикации «Собачьего сердца» повесть разобрали на цитаты, одна из которых: «пропал Калабуховский дом» - связана с домом № 1 в Чистом переулке:

« - Зинушка, что это такое значит?
- Опять общее собрание сделали, Филипп Филиппович, - сказала Зина.
- Опять! - горестно воскликнул Филипп Филиппович,- ну, теперь, стало быть, пропал Калабуховский дом. Придется уезжать, но куда, спрашивается? Все будет как по маслу. В начале каждый вечер пение, потом в сортирах замерзнут трубы, потом лопнет котел в паровом отоплении и так далее. Крышка Калабухову!»

В этом же доме родился советский физик, основоположник динамической физики высоких давлений Лев Владимирович Альтшулер. В своих воспоминаниях он записал: «В 1910 году мой дедушка-аптекарь снял для своего сына у домовладельца Кулагина квартиру на четвертом этаже дома 24, что на углу улицы Пречистенки и Обухова переулка, рядом с пожарной частью. Мы жили в третьем подъезде, а дядя Булгакова, ставший прототипом профессора Преображенского, - во втором. Я родился в ноябре 1913 года в этом доме».

Mikhail Pokrovsky, another uncle of the writer, an internist by training also frequently visited and lived in a special room in the Nikolay Bulgakov’s apartment. Michael Bulgakov visited his uncles hundreds of times both before moving to Moscow and after becoming the Muscovite. Philip Philippovich Preobrazensky, the main character of the novel "Heart of a Dog" by Bulgakov lived in the in the mezzanine apartment located in the second entrance of the former "Kalabuhov house". N.M. Pokrovsky was the real person, the prototype of professor Preobrazensky. As we can learn from the famous novel, professor Preobrazensky conducted a daring experiment to rejuvenate by transplanting the pituitary gland, which spilled over into an unexpected "full humanization" of the dog Sharik. The operation was conducted in the operating room located in the large professor’s apartment. Here the newly-born citizen Sharikov legitimately claimed his lawful "16 square yards of" professorial apartment. After the publication of "Heart of a Dog " the story was dismantled for quotes, one of which is ".. this is the end of Kalabuhov’s house!" - associated with the house number 1 in Chisty lane: " - Zinushka what does it mean? - This is the general meeting again, Philip Philippovich - Zina said. - Again! - Sorrowfully exclaimed Philip Philippovich - well, now, therefore, this is the end of Kalabuhov’s house. We'll have to leave, but where to, I ask you? It'll be like clockwork. At the beginning this will be singing each evening, then toilet pipes will freeze, then the steam heating boiler will burst in and so on. This is the end of Kalabuhov’s house!" Lev Vladimirovich Altshuler, the Soviet physicist, and founder of dynamical physics of high-pressure was born in the same house. In his memoirs, he wrote: "In 1910, my grandfather, the pharmacist rented an apartment for his son from homeowner Kulagin on the fourth floor of house number 24 on the corner of Prechistenka and Obukhov alley, next to the fire department. We lived in a third entrance, and Bulgakov's uncle, who became the prototype of the professor Preobrazensky lived in the second entrance. I was born in November 1913 in this house."
